Lampblack Art

Who (or What) is ‘Lampblack’?

Lampblack is a form of early manuscript ink made from soot from oil lamps, producing a deep and luscious black ink. I started drawing with pen and ink before moving over to digital art, and the aesthetics and stylistic elements of ink drawing moved over with me. I specialise in bold, clean line work contrasting with areas of high detail. Even in my colour pieces the lines are the key feature - I like to think of solid line work as the skeleton on which you build the rest of the illustration. And I like to think that it’s what makes my work stand out and look uniquely Lampblack!

I work entirely on Procreate on my iPad Pro. Whilst I use a variety of line and texture brushes in my work, I do not use any map-making stamps or bundles which have become so popular online. Every building, every mountain, every blade of grass is hand drawn by me, to your specification - guaranteed.

I am proud to have provided cartography illustrations for some seriously talented authors, including Sarah Rees Brennan, Andrea Stewart and Sabaa Tahir - and many more. I am also the cartographer for the UK’s newest fest LARP (live action roleplay game), Menhirs Fate LARP, as well providing work for Profound Decision’s Empire LRP. I really love making writer’s worlds come to life through art!

I provide character portrait and illustration services within the LARP and ttrpg (tabletop roleplaying game) hobby spaces, with a special passion for depicting the characters of people from underrepresented communities, particularly trans and queer people. As a member of the queer community myself, representation through art is something which is very close to my heart.

Examples of my work are available on my Gallery page, and please don’t hesitate to drop me a line using my contact form if you’re interested in working with me or commissioning a piece of art!
